The time in each day, which is given to everyone, flows by without resistance. What is made of that time is solely up to the mental attitude of the user. In May, the month of warm sunshine, we present Beyond the Limits, an exhibition by artist Kim Je-eon, who retrieves the dreams, hopes and loves of people living this era, and meaningfully documents them.
The artist uses a tablet PC to form his images, which he then transfers to a canvas. The quality of the light in the device makes the subject brighter than in reality. In order to maintain that brightness also on the canvas, the artist uses brilliant primary colors, which make his works even warmer. Kim’s work is also characterized by brush strokes with thick matiere and simple compositions. The texture is melted into the painting to avoid excessive expression, yet gentle thickness is applied to the heads and decorations of the characters to give a sense of depth and prevent the works from appearing simply as flat surfaces. In picture composition, the artist places a simple character and a phrase from a sentence in the central section to clearly emphasize his message, thus giving a soft yet solid hope to viewers, as if he is breaking out of a life that has been closed off to others and himself. Before beginning a work, the artist reads a book, watches a movie or a musical, or looks at pictures in his phone. When an interesting idea comes to mind, he notes it down on his memo pad, and later thinks about how he will visualize his text as an image. Thus he captures sparkling imaginative scenes from his inconsequential daily life. Even looking at a single sentence written by the artist, one can understand the kind of emotions he is trying to share and communicate with the person standing before his work.
As shown in the title Beyond the Limits, the exhibition “goes beyond the limits” to overcome the difficulties that people may encounter, gathering a greater-than-expected number of fragments of daily life, and bundling them into positive pieces of happiness, and thus communicating a heart that is precious for you, me and us. We hope that this small effort to search for and share the small things that make our lives a little special, amidst the life we have let flow by indifferently, may empower you, and that you may share this experience with those who are precious to you.
