이지은은 자연과 바다, 집과 정원 같은 공간을 평면적인 구도로 그리며 치유와 안식을 그리는 작가다. 그는 달항아리를 비움과 채움이 공존하는 존재로 바라본다.

《An Ocean of Stars, Just You and I》는 이지은이 달항아리를 비움과 채움이 공존하는 존재로 바라보며 완성한 작업이다. 깨끗한 항아리 표면 앞에서 무엇을 그려야 할지 막막함이 앞섰던 작가는, 비어 있으면서도 채움의 결과물인 달항아리의 이중적 성격에 착안해 우선 가득 채워보자는 마음으로 작업을 시작했다. 평소 좋아하는 바다와, 별이 빛나는 우주적인 밤하늘의 이미지를 항아리 전면에 옮겨, 검푸른 표면 위로 무수한 별들이 반짝이는 밤바다를 그려냈다. 둥근 항아리를 따라 배경을 채워나가는 과정은 평면 캔버스와는 다른 활동적이고 무한한 공간감을 안겨주었고, 작은 별과 반짝임 하나하나에 정성을 들이는 이 채움의 행위 자체가 작가에게는 하나의 수행이 되었다. 무언가로 가득 채워야 비로소 무엇을 비워야 할지 보인다는 믿음처럼, 이 항아리는 채움을 통해 다시 비움을 상상하게 하는 순환의 이미지를 담고 있다.
About the Artist
1991년 태어난 이지은은 동아대학교 서양화과를 졸업했다. 갤러리 ERD(서울·부산)에서 《East: a place where the day begins》(2025), 《기억의 색깔들: Palette of memories》(2024), 《흐름 FLOW》(2023) 등 다수의 개인전을 열었으며, 도잉아트, 김리아 갤러리, 아줄레주 갤러리 등에서도 개인전을 선보였다. 아트부산, 방콕 아트페어 등 국내외 아트페어에 갤러리 ERD와 함께 참여해 왔으며, 2017년 제1회 프로젝트 아트 부산 지원전에 선정되었다. 이번 프린트베이커리(PBG)의 프리즈 서울 프로젝트 《THE MOON JAR CONSTELLATION》에는 별이 가득한 밤바다를 담은 달항아리 신작으로 참여한다.
Lee Jieun describes herself as an artist who paints healing and repose, rendering nature, the sea, houses, and gardens in flattened compositions. Working from the planar structure of East Asian painting, she uses acrylic and oil together, though in recent years she has worked primarily in acrylic. She sees the moon jar as a form in which emptying and filling coexist: in the process by which grains of sand become earth and are completed as white porcelain, she finds a double meaning — a symbol of emptiness that is at the same time the result of filling — and receives it with the sensibility of the Buddhist teaching that form is emptiness and emptiness is form.
Born in 1991, Lee graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Dong-A University. She has held solo exhibitions at Gallery ERD in Seoul and Busan, including East: a place where the day begins (2025), Palette of Memories (2024), and FLOW (2023), as well as at Doing Art, Kimreeaa Gallery, and Azulejo Gallery. She has participated in Art Busan and the Bangkok art fair with Gallery ERD, and was selected for the 1st Project Art Busan support exhibition in 2017.
