Maria Chang, b. 1981
장마리아는 '깨짐'이라는 감정적 경험을 조형 언어로 번역해온 작가다. 그에게 깨짐은 파괴가 아니라 기쁨으로 전환되는 감정이다.

《2026MC104 Broken, Becoming》은 장마리아가 오랫동안 다뤄온 '깨짐'이라는 주제를 달항아리 위에 새롭게 풀어낸 작업이다. 유년 시절 박 터뜨리기 놀이에서 느꼈던, 파괴가 기쁨으로 전환되는 감정의 경험을 바탕으로, 항아리의 겉면은 단아하게 마감했다. 그러나 안을 들여다보면 이야기가 달라진다. 다른 항아리를 깨어 만든 파편들이 내부에 담겨 있는데, 이 조각들은 단순한 파편이 아니라 하나의 형태가 분해되어 남은, 시간이 축적된 흔적이다. 작가는 관람객이 안을 들여다보며 마치 보물을 찾듯 그 파편들과 마주하고, 항아리의 외부와 내부라는 서로 다른 층위의 서사가 연결되는 경험을 하기를 바랐다. '자세히 보아야 아름답다'는 말처럼, 이 항아리는 가까이 들여다보는 이에게만 자신의 진짜 이야기를 들려준다.

About the Artist
1981년 미국 앨라배마에서 태어난 장마리아는 서울을 기반으로 활동하며 2005년 홍익대학교 미술대학을 졸업했다. 가나아트센터 스페이스 97에서 《Balancing》(2024), 가나아트 엘에이에서 《Anticipation》(2024), 가나아트센터에서 《Iridescent》(2022) 등 국내외에서 다수의 개인전을 열었으며, 팔라초 펜디 서울, 구호 한남 플래그십 스토어 등과의 협업 프로젝트도 진행했다. 2021년에는 프린트베이커리(PBG)와 엠샤퓨티에 와인 컬래버레이션을 함께한 바 있으며, 파리 시떼 데 자르와 뉴욕 미라보 프레스 레지던시에 참여했다. 지난해에 이어 올해 두 번째로 프린트베이커리(PBG)의 프리즈 서울 프로젝트 《THE MOON JAR CONSTELLATION》에 참여한다.
Maria Chang has translated the emotional experience of 'breaking' into a language of form. Her starting point is a childhood memory: after returning to Korea from the United States, playing the game of bursting a paper ball, throwing beanbags again and again until the cracks accumulated, the ball finally split, and colored paper and gifts poured out — a moment of joy and exhilaration. For her, breaking is not destruction but an emotion that turns into joy. Moving beyond early work rooted in her own story, she expanded the concept to the relationship of 'you and I' in the In-Between series, shifting to work made of clay alone rather than paraffin, with texture brought to the fore; this led to the vividly colored Spring series, which carries a message of turning darker times into affirmation.
Born in 1981 in Alabama, USA, Maria Chang is based in Seoul and graduated from the College of Fine Arts, Hongik University, in 2005. She has held solo exhibitions including Balancing at Gana Art Center Space 97 (2024), Anticipation at Gana Art LA (2024), and Iridescent at Gana Art Center (2022), and has undertaken collaborative projects with Palazzo Fendi Seoul and the KUHO Hannam flagship store. In 2021 she collaborated with PBG on an M. Chapoutier wine project, and she has participated in residencies at Cité des Arts in Paris and Mirabo Press in New York.
