"Atlas des rêves", a drawing exhibition by Kim Sun Woo, talks about the dreams and possibilities of modern people through extinct Dodo birds. The exhibition presents drawings of his records of daily life in Paris and thoughts on travel while staying in “Cite des arts", an artist community operated by the Paris government, for three months. Leaving behind his familiar works in South Korea, this exhibition presents non-standardized works by the artist, which have not been introduced before. Through this exhibition, the artist wants to talk about the moments of rest and inspiration for a long journey to be lived in the future, which also reflects the path he has lived as an artist.
In 2015, artist Kim Sunwoo personally travelled to the island of Mauritius, known as the home of the extinct dodo, and stayed an entire month during the summer to do research, including data collection, drawings, and interviews, about the dodo on location. On this basis, he has since focused his efforts on unfolding stories about modern people and modern society through the dodo. Beyond just a species that tragically became extinct after giving up on flight, the dodos in the artist’s work carefully tell stories as beings that offer small topics of conversation in our long journey in the form of new stories and potential.
